A Georgia football player died of head injuries two days after losing consciousness during a game.

An article on the death of 16-year-old linebacker Dylan Thomas of Pike County High School appears here.

A Tragic Loss

At first, Dylan Thomas’s teammates thought their friend had suffered a leg injury. Leaving the game after an injury in the third quarter, Thomas told athletic trainers and the team doctor he could not feel his body.

He then fell unconscious. He was airlifted from WellStar Spalding Regional Hospital to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where he was pronounced dead of an apparent Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) two days later.

Game-Related Injuries Can Lead to Death

According to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury’s research, 13 of the four million young people who play organized football died from injuries suffered while playing the sport last year. Of the 13 who died:

  • 4 died of direct causes, including on-field trauma or injuries
  • 9 died of indirect causes such as heat stroke or cardiac arrest

Know the Warning Signs

The most common form of TBI for both children and young adults is a concussion. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define a concussion as “a type of traumatic brain injury from a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body.

” While some symptoms appear right away, others may take hours or days to become apparent. Common symptoms include dizziness, blurred vision, loss-of-balance, and problems with bright light or loud noise.

Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, or headaches. If you or a loved one is experiencing these symptoms following a head injury it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

  • My orthopedic doctor recommended Graves McLain Injury Lawyers, PLLC, to me following the need for revision hip surgery due to a hip from Stryker that was putting poison into my system. The doctor took care of the hip, and Graves McLain Injury Lawyers, PLLC, took care of the legal case. They were very thorough, professional, courteous, and always ready to answer the questions I had throughout the length of the case. In a word, the entire office is fantastic. I’m sure they were tired of my inquiries on the case’s progress, but they did not show it. They were always willing to respond and were very positive. If I ever have a claim in the future, they will be the first group to whom I reach out.
