On Tuesday, September 24th, Attorney Chad McLain of Graves McLain appeared on KTUL’s Good Day Tulsa program to discuss cyberbullying, and how parents can recognize and address the problem, should their children be targeted. Watch the segment:
Cyberbullying is bullying that occurs on digital devices, such as cell phones, computers, and tablets. It commonly takes place on social media, in text messages, and over email.
Cyberbullying can include sending or posting negative, harmful, or false content about a person, or even using embarrassing or personal information against someone.
There are several signs that parents can look out for which may indicate that their child is being bullied, whether at school or online.
Drastic changes in behavior and/or attitudes can signal that something is wrong. Children who are victims of cyberbullying may exhibit some of the following behaviors or symptoms:
If your child is being cyberbullied, there are some things you can do to help. Talking with your children about online issues on a regular basis is one way to assist.
Let them know that they can come to you with any inappropriate, upsetting, or dangerous content they may encounter.
Setting reasonable limits and rules for internet usage is a good way to build trust with your kids.
Parents should also instruct their children to never respond to cyberbullying or online threats. Save all evidence including email addresses and screen names in case the issue needs to escalate to local law enforcement.
Never blame your children for being a victim; instead, be supportive and understanding, and work to resolve the issue together. The potential emotional damage of being cyberbullied is very real.
