On Thursday, August 20th, Attorney Chad McLain of Graves McLain appeared via Skype on KTUL’s Good Day Tulsa program to discuss the firm’s 5th annual backpack program, benefiting Tulsa Public School students. Nearly 2,000 students in 5 Tulsa public elementary schools will receive a free backpack filled with school supplies. Watch the segment:
The backpack program was founded in 2016, and aims to provide underprivileged students with the supplies they will need to succeed during the school year. Recent studies have shown that nearly 20% of Tulsa residents are below the poverty line, and nearly 30% of children in Tulsa fall into that category.
Back-to-school shopping costs can quickly add up. The average family is estimated to spend $700 on back-to-school items this year.
The program also aims to take some of the burden off teachers.
93% of public school teachers spend an average of 0 on classroom supplies annually.
By supplying these children with the tools they need to learn, they are positioned to succeed academically.
With Tulsa Public Schools starting virtually this year, the items kids need for school have changed. Families may have a difficult time obtaining the technology needed to participate in classes. Those costs can certainly add up quickly.
However, students will still need the classic supplies – pencils, notebooks, folders, and the like. The free backpacks contain these items and more.
The execution of the program is a bit different this year.
Previously, assemblies and back-to-school nights were opportunities to not only distribute the backpacks, but also to connect with the students and provide encouragement and support.
Given the initial virtual learning model, the schools will be primarily giving out the bags at drive-up events.
