For many families in North Tulsa and surrounding Oklahoma cities, the back-to-school season can be financially challenging. Buying backpacks, school supplies, and new clothes can quickly become expensive, especially for families with more than one child.
The Oklahoma Association for Justice (OAJ), Graves McLain and Maples, Nix & Diesselhorst, started the Free Backpack Program two years ago to make a difference. The start of this annual initiative provided the entire student body at Jackson Elementary School in North Tulsa with a free backpack filled with school supplies for the 2016-2017 school year.
A huge success in its first year, the Oklahoma Backpack Drive expanded the program for the 2017-2018 school year to include three North Tulsa schools and 1,000 students. Now with the help of a growing base of community leaders and organizations, we are thrilled to announce that this year we’ll be giving free backpacks to six north Tulsa elementary schools!
“We all need to do our part to ensure that every young person gets a proper education, and we hope that the free backpack program will help students throughout North Tulsa get their new school year off to a strong start,” explained Attorney Chad McLain.
With the help of the Oklahoma Association for Justice (OAJ), Maples, Nix & Diesselhorst, and other local businesses we are thrilled to be able to expand the Oklahoma Free Backpack Program and help over 2,000 students in North Tulsa start the school year off on a positive note.
An assembly will be held at each school, where a partner attorney, volunteers, and community members will hand out the backpacks to each student. The assemblies will take place during the first week of school to ensure all students get the backpacks on time!
