A recent report issued by a public advocacy group has uncovered trace amounts of glyphosate—the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer—in several popular brands of beer and wine. A detailed article on the report and its findings are available here.
The study, issued by the United States Public Research Group Education Fund, tested five brands of wine, fourteen brands of beer, and one hard cider beverage.
Testing revealed detectable levels of glyphosate in nearly all of them. Positive levels were even found in three of four beverages marketed as organic.
The concentrations found ranged from 5.2 Parts Per Billion (PPB) to 51 Parts Per Billion in some samples.
How Much is Too Much?
While these numbers fall below risk tolerances established by the U.
S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), at least one scientific study indicates a concentration of glyphosate as low as one Part Per Trillion (PPT) may be sufficient to disrupt the function of the human endocrine system and may stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells.
Know the Risks
While the EPA states that glyphosate is safe when used per directions, the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified the substance as a “probable human carcinogen.” California added glyphosate to a list of known carcinogens in 2015.
There are currently 9,300 court cases in the United States against Bayer AG, the parent company of Monsanto. These lawsuits—including 760 cases consolidated in a federal court in San Francisco—allege exposure to the pesticide contributes to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Monsanto has consistently denied any link between the use of Roundup and cancer.
As we reported in an earlier blog, a jury in California State Superior Court ordered Monsanto to pay $289 million to a former school groundskeeper who claimed his Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was caused by heavy exposure to Roundup. The jury also agreed that Monsanto should have labeled the product to include this potential health hazard. The judgment was later reduced to $78 million.
