On Thursday, May 14th, Attorney Chad McLain of Graves McLain appeared via Skype on KTUL’s Good Day Tulsa program to talk about bike safety with a few special guests – his son, Maverick, and his daughter, Maya. Watch the segment:
National Bike Month, celebrated each May, was founded in 1956 by the League of American Bicyclists. This spring, biking is experiencing a surge in popularity as people find ways to get fresh air and exercise while being mindful of social distancing guidelines.
We all know that wearing a helmet while biking is always a good idea. While there is no state-wide law in Oklahoma requiring the use of helmets, head injuries are the most serious type of injuries sustained by bicyclists. Wearing a helmet can decrease the risk of serious injuries by 70%.
The fit of a bike helmet is critical to its effectiveness.
Kid’s helmets are no exception. While it may be challenging to get your child to cooperate with a proper fitting, it is one of the simplest ways to keep them safe. When purchasing a helmet, it should fit the child at the time of purchase. Don’t buy a helmet with the intention that the child will grow into it.
The side straps should form a “Y” and meet just under the ear, and the chin strap should have enough room for one finger to fit between the strap and the chin.
Another important thing to do is to make sure that your or your child’s bike is properly fitted. While adult bikes are listed by the frame size, kids’ bikes are listed by their wheel size.
Keep in mind that different brands and styles of bikes may fit differently. While ensuring the right fit may seem daunting, there are many resources online to help determine which bike and size may be right for your child.
