Injured by heartburn medications? Contact Graves McLain for a Free Consultation.
For some individuals, the stomach tends to produce too much gastric acid that then enters other parts of the body – like the throat. When this occurs, the acid can cause ulcers, irritation and other damage if not properly treated with heartburn or GERD medication. Some of the most popular medications historically include the H2 Blocker Zantac as well as several different Proton Pump Inhibitors like Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid and more. Unfortunately, we now know that several studies have found the use of these drugs can lead to increased risk for cancer, heart attack, kidney disease or the development of dementia.

At the current time, more than 15,000 lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of some of the most popular prescription and over-the-counter heartburn and GERD medications. These active lawsuits argue that medication manufacturers did not properly warn patients about these potential side-effects and did not do enough to correct the issue when they became aware of them. And, while the number of lawsuits against manufacturers had a quick incline, many attorneys still expect thousands more PPI lawsuits to enter into multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the coming years.
The most common medications currently facing lawsuits include:
Zantac - GlaxoSmithKline
Zantac OTC - Pfizer
Prilosec - Proctor & Gamble
Prilosec OTC - Proctor & Gamble
Nexium - AstraZeneca
Prevacid - AstraZeneca
Protonix - Pfizer
Dexilant - Takeda Pharmaceuticals

While heartburn and acid reflux may seem like relatively harmless conditions, the drugs used to treat these conditions and provide relief are now being linked to many dangerous and potentially fatal side effects. To make matters worse, many experts in the medical community now believe that these drugs are being overprescribed to patients, making the problem even worse. When drug manufacturers fail to warn doctors and patients about the potential dangers of prescription medications, they put the health and safety of patients at risk. At Graves McLain, our experienced Tulsa Drug Injury lawyers have extensive experience standing up to major drug companies on behalf of our clients.
